PT Freeport Indonesia plans to build a smelter processing and refining facility in Gresik, East Java. Executive Director Tony Wenas confirmed that according to the initial plan, the company will build a smelter in Gresik, East Java. In fact, he said, the smelter development plan will still run with or without cooperation with PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMNT)
“During this time, with or without AMNT, PTFI will still build a smelter in Gresik.We are planning to build a smelter in Gresik,” Tony said on the sidelines of the House Commission VII Hearing Meeting with Director General of Mineral and Coal Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jakarta, Wednesday/3).
In response to the statement of Executive Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, President Director of PT Amman Mineral Industri Lukman Mahfoedz also confirmed that AMNT through AMIN will continue to build smelters with or without cooperation with PT Freeport Indonesia.
“With or without PT Freeport Indonesia, the company will continue to build a smelter in Benete, Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara,” Lukman said in front of members of Commission VII DPR RI.
As it is known, in the Hearing Meeting of Commission VII DPR RI, each directors of the mining company explained the progress of the smelter. For the progress of PT Freeport Indonesia’s smelter has only reached 2.4 percent. The construction of PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara smelters for copper concentrate has reached 10.10 percent.
The Freeport Smelter will have an annual capacity of 2 million copper concentrates per year with an output capacity of 460,000 copper cathodes. The investment cost of this smelter development reached US $ 2.59 billion. PT AMNT’s smelter input capacity is 1 million tons of copper concentrate per year and can be increased up to 1.6 million or 2 million tons per year with an investment value of US $ 1.6 billion.
Referring to Freeport’s data on exposure in Commission VII, the progress of the Freeport smelter development has now gone through the initial work stages. The details of the work are feasibility studies, environmental studies and permits, and land lease agreements. While the progress of the construction of PT AMNT smelter has been the stage of engineering process.
